How do I change my domain or web address?
Short answer: Tell us the new name. We register or connect it, point your website at it, and tell you when it is live. Your current address keeps working while the change goes through.
Steps
- Email hello@sortedonline.uk from the email
address on your account. Give us the new domain you want.
- We check whether it is free and tell you before anything is registered.
- If you agree, we register the new domain, or add one you already own, and
point your website at it.
- Wait for the change to spread. Internet computers refresh their copies of
your domain's records on their own schedule. This is called DNS propagation.
- We check the new address and reply to tell you it is live.
- Keep your old domain working until the new one is live. Tell us if you want
to stop renewing the old one.
What to expect
A new domain and its records can take a few minutes, or up to 48 hours to work everywhere. Your website never goes offline during the change, because it keeps answering on the old address until the new one is ready. Changing your web address does not change your email on its own, so tell us if you want the email address to move too. See business email on your own domain for how a domain and email fit together.
